MIDRASHA

INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN

FROM TANACH TO CHASSIDUT
AGGADAH TO HALACHA
ENGAGING IN
JEWISH SCHOLARSHIP
At The Midrasha Institute for Women in the Ludwig and Erica Jesselson Institute for Advanced Torah Studies, over 750 women immerse themselves annually in over 80 courses of Jewish study, ranging from the Oral Law to the Written Law, Tanach to Chassidut, and Agadah to Halacha.

Students further their Jewish knowledge under the guidance of a faculty of Torah experts from a broad spectrum of Jewish scholarship and religious backgrounds. With this network of scholars and educators the students strengthen their Jewish identity, attending the many seminars, lectures and public forums that Midrasha provides and which in many cases are audited by the community at large. Options can range from the Mesivta program, which is designed for guided study of Jewish Law or Talmud in pairs, to the Reishit program, which enables students from secular backgrounds to focus on Jewish identity through familiarity with Jewish texts.

Additionally, Midrasha offers the prestigious Tikvah Fellowship workshop for exceptional students. The program addresses core issues on the Israeli public agenda through the prism of Jewish sources – a workshop geared toward building a high-level cadre of Jewish leaders of the future.

SYNTHESIS OF
WORLDS
As Israel’s largest advanced Torah studies institute for women, Midrasha at Bar-Ilan University has blazed the path for the creation of an elite cohort of Talmud sages who are women – female “gedolei Torah” – who can use their Torah and secular scholarship and experience to help find innovative solutions to age-old challenges facing the Jewish world.

Taking into account the priorities of work, family, and academic study, Midrasha provides a program for women seeking to synthesize their spiritual endeavors along with worldly pursuits.

GROWING
LEADERSHIP ROLES
With the growing need for female guidance in Jewish communal life, Midrasha strives to fill leadership roles while encouraging self-fulfillment. The first course of its kind for Religious Women Advocates was launched in 2005. It provides women students with a lucid understanding of the Jewish laws needed to represent women in religious and civil courts. And Madrichot Kalot gain halachic knowledge and the necessary sensitivity to prepare brides for an enriched, married life.

Overall, Midrasha provides an open space to learn, expand and grow, coupled with schooling of the law and every angle of the law. Most women have never been offered this opportunity and so Bar-Ilan University is ensuring that all avenues of studies are offered to women from all walks of life.
